Ancient Board Game Mystery Solved: AI Decodes Rules of Mysterious Roman Stone

Rules of mysterious ancient board game decoded by AI, scientists sayA centuries-old enigma has finally been cracked, thanks to the power of artificial intelligence. A team of scientists and researchers from the Netherlands have successfully decoded the rules of a mysterious ancient board game etched onto a smooth stone dating back to the Roman era.

The Discovery
The stone, discovered in the Netherlands, features diagonal and straight lines cut into it. Using 3D imaging created by the restoration studio Restaura, scientists discovered that some of these lines were deeper than others, suggesting pieces were moved along them, with some more than others. The appearance of the stone combined with this wear strongly suggests it's a game.

The AI Breakthrough
Researchers at Maastricht University then used an artificial intelligence program called Ludii to deduce the rules of ancient games. They trained Ludii on the rules of about 100 ancient games from the same area as the Roman stone, and it produced dozens of possible rule sets. The AI then played the game against itself and identified a few variants that are enjoyable for humans to play.

Cross-Checking the Rules
The researchers cross-checked the possible rules with the wear on the stone to uncover the most likely set of movements in the game. However, they also sounded a note of caution, acknowledging that AI can always find game rules if presented with a line pattern like the one on the stone.

The Game's Objective
According to scientists, the aim of the 'deceptively simple but thrilling strategy game' was to hunt and trap the opponent's pieces in as few moves as possible. Researchers believe glass, bone or earthenware were used as game pieces.

The discovery of this ancient board game is a significant breakthrough for archaeologists and historians, providing new insights into the lives and leisure activities of people living during the Roman era. The use of AI in deciphering the rules has opened up new avenues for research and exploration, demonstrating the power of technology in uncovering the secrets of the past.
