Unveiling a Hidden Chapter in American History: Byron Allen and Ava DuVernay's New Film

Byron Allen and Ava DuVernay set feature film on Coretta Scott King’s lifelong fight for truthIn a bold move to redefine the narrative of one of America's most pivotal moments, acclaimed filmmaker Ava DuVernay has joined forces with media mogul Byron Allen to develop a feature film that sheds light on the lesser-known story of Coretta Scott King's relentless pursuit of truth in the wake of her husband Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s assassination.

A Legacy of Truth and Justice
The film, titled 'King vs. The United States of America,' delves into the decades-long quest by Coretta Scott King to uncover the truth behind her husband's tragic death in 1968. Officially attributed to James Earl Ray, a known segregationist who later recanted his confession, this explanation never satisfied the King family or many others. Instead, what followed was a sustained fight for justice, driven by a refusal to accept a simplified account of history.

A Growing Body of Evidence
As Coretta Scott King's pursuit intersected with a growing body of evidence, it became increasingly clear that the official narrative was incomplete. In the mid-1970s, a U.S. Senate committee revealed that J. Edgar Hoover and the FBI had engaged in illegal surveillance, wiretapping, and harassment of Dr. King. Decades later, a 1999 civil trial concluded with a jury verdict finding that a broader conspiracy existed, involving government agencies and others, rather than a lone gunman acting in isolation.

A Leader in Her Own Right
The film also brings to the forefront Coretta Scott King's remarkable leadership and advocacy work. Long after her husband's death, she emerged as a powerful voice for justice, equality, feminism, and LGBTQ rights. She founded the King Center, became an international advocate against South Africa's apartheid regime, and helped shape the moral framework of modern civil rights activism in the United States.

A Personal and Professional Commitment
Byron Allen, CEO of Allen Media Group Motion Pictures, has described the project as deeply personal, pointing to his long-standing interest in the King family's legacy. Ava DuVernay, whose film 'Selma' remains one of the most defining cinematic portrayals of Dr. King, has said she is honored to explore this chapter of the family's story.

As the development of 'King vs. The United States of America' coincides with renewed attention to civil rights, protest, and press freedom, this film serves as a timely reminder that truth and justice are ongoing pursuits. By centering Coretta Scott King's relentless search for truth, this project asks audiences to reconsider not only how history is told but also who bears the burden of truth.
