US Sanctions Costa Rican Drug Ring for Alleged Cocaine Trafficking

Drug network, including beauty salon, sanctioned for allegedly trafficking cocaine to U.S. through Costa RicaIn a major blow to international drug trafficking, the US has imposed sanctions on five Costa Ricans and five Costa Rican entities, including a beauty salon, for allegedly helping to transport tons of cocaine from Colombia to the US and Europe. The move is part of a larger effort by the Trump administration to disrupt the Caribbean-based drug trade.

US Treasury Imposes Sanctions on Costa Rican Nationals
The US Treasury Department's Office of Foreign Assets Control has targeted Luis Manuel Picado Grijalba, known as 'Shock,' and his brother Jordie Kevin Picado Grijalba, or 'Noni,' for their alleged leadership roles in the cocaine trafficking network. The brothers are accused of importing cocaine to Costa Rica via maritime routes and storing it at warehouses throughout the country.

Beauty Salon Linked to Alleged Money Laundering
The sanctions also include a beauty salon called Magic Esthetic Salon, which is linked to alleged drug trafficking and money laundering. The US Treasury alleges that Grijalba's wife and mother-in-law, as well as family-operated companies, were involved in the illicit activities.

Arrests and Extradition Proceedings
In December 2024, Shock was arrested in the UK and is currently being held pending a final decision on extradition to the US. Last August, Noni was arrested in Costa Rica and is also facing extradition proceedings. The US military has conducted a series of deadly strikes on alleged drug-smuggling boats in the Caribbean Sea and eastern Pacific Ocean.

Larger Effort to Disrupt Caribbean-Based Drug Trade
The sanctions are part of a larger Trump administration pursuit of the drug trade in the Caribbean. The US has also sanctioned six accused drug traffickers who allegedly used boats and 'narco subs' to traffic cocaine. Four Guyanese nationals and two Colombians were targeted for their alleged involvement in trafficking tons of cocaine from South America to the United States, Europe, and the Caribbean.

The US sanctions on Costa Rican nationals and entities mark a significant step in the fight against international drug trafficking. As the Trump administration continues its efforts to disrupt the Caribbean-based drug trade, it remains to be seen how these actions will impact the flow of cocaine into the US and Europe.
